What is a urinary tract infection?
What are urinary tract infections (UTIs) and what are the symptoms?
A urinary tract infection is an infection that occurs in any part of the urinary tract. Most UTIs occur in the lower urinary tract (the bladder and the urethra), though they can spread to the upper urinary tract (the kidneys).
UTI symptoms may include:
- An intense, persistent and frequent urge to urinate
- A burning sensation or pain when urinating
- Passing frequent, small amounts of urine
- Cloud-colored urine
- Blood in the urine
- Strong or foul-smelling urine
- Pelvic pain (UTI symptom for women only)
- Pain in the side, lower abdomen, or back
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Fever
How do you get a UTI?
UTIs are caused by bacteria that enter the body through the urethra and then multiply in an area or areas of the urinary tract.
Escherichia coli (E. coli) are overwhelmingly the most common cause of bladder and urethra infections. An estimated 80-90% of UTIs are caused by this bacteria. In rarer cases, UTIs can also be caused by fungi, genetic predispositions, other types of bacteria, or an infected prostate.
How do you get rid of a UTI?
Antibiotics are usually the first—and most recommended—course of treatment for UTIs. Doctors use the results of a urine culture to identify which bacteria are causing the UTI. Then they can prescribe the best type and dosage of antibiotics to get rid of that bacteria and the infection. In some cases, home remedies can also help mitigate UTI symptoms if taken as directed by a doctor.
